Senna Leaves
Senna is an herb. The leaves and the fruit of the plant are used to make medicine. The leaves are used to make Senna tea which is a popular herbal remedy that’s often marketed as a laxative, weight loss aid, and detox method. Originally from Egypt, senna is now grown worldwide, including in countries like India and Somalia.
Senna is an FDA-approved nonprescription laxative. It is used to treat constipation and also to clear the bowel before diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy.
Some people may also use senna tea to relieve discomfort associated with hemorrhoids.
Although unsupported by any scientific evidence, Senna is increasingly included in herbal teas and supplements that claim to boost metabolism and promote weight loss. These products are often referred to as “skinny teas” or “teatoxes.”
